25 Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2023

It’s 2023 and we’re previewing all the music, movies and TV we’re looking forward to this year with a series of lists. We’ve also published our Upcoming Artists to Watch list; Check it out here and keep an eye out for more recaps this week.

Looking ahead to the most anticipated new series of 2023, what is striking is the variety of stories told by an ever-expanding array of creators. There are big-budget spy capers and WWII drama to look forward to, as well as smaller tales from the likes of Pete Davidson and Rian Johnson. There are sci-fi adaptations and unconventional superheroes, but also series set in the worlds of ’70s rock ‘n’ roll, liberal arts academia, and a galaxy far, far away.

2023 may see a few fewer series than in years past, but that’s not exactly a complaint — especially since there are so many riches to be found in the broadcast, cable, and streaming worlds. Because of that, we’ve strictly limited this list to new series as opposed to returning (since there are also plenty of shows returning for new seasons that have had us hyped, from Loki to Ted Lasso to Succession). Television is vast and rich and we can watch it in the safety and comfort of our homes. Television remains a gift.

The Advisor (Prime Video)

Created by: Tony Basgallop
Cast: Christoph Waltz, Nat Wolff, Brittany O’Grady, Aimee Carrero
Network/Platform: Prime Video
Release date: February 24, 2023

Normally, the tale of a consultant hired to restore order to a gaming startup would be the premise for a workplace comedy, but we’re talking about Christoph Waltz. The man can take any dialogue written for him and make it sound menacing. In the trailer for The Consultant, Waltz’s character describes himself as a “monster” and a clerk calls him a “sociopath,” so it’s pretty obvious viewers are in for some intriguingly dark moments. — EF

True Lies

Created by: Matt Nix
Cast: Steve Howey, Ginger Gonzaga, Erica Hernandez, Omar Miller, Mike O’Gorman, Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye
Network/Platform: CBS

Indeed, given the open-ended nature of True Lies’ central premise, it’s a little surprising that it took this long for the 1994 James Cameron film to be brought to screens as an ongoing series. But hey, it’s happening now on CBS, with Steve Howey (Shameless) as a spy living undercover in the suburbs and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) as a housewife who discovers her husband’s secret life. Anthony Hemingway (American Crime Story) is directing the pilot and Burn Notice creator Matt Nix is directing the show, and even if this show turns out to be another Burn Notice… well, Burn Notice was a lot of fun. — LSM
