I’m sorry to tell you that next year, 2023, Twilight will be old enough to vote. The Interview with the Vampire is now old enough to be a TV series reboot. Vampires have come back in a big way in recent years, and those of us who grew up watching Lestat, Edward, and the others live for it. Below, I’ve selected eight weird vampire books for you to read to celebrate the vampire renaissance.

Someone once pointed out to me that vampires represent both humanity’s longing for immortality and our fear of the Tantalean. They have constant cravings, but their hunger cannot be satisfied. They are permanently dehydrated but can never quench their thirst. They’re always horny, but… well, you get the point. This is the compromise vampires make in order to live forever: eternal dissatisfaction.

If vampires are really about how we all want to live forever in cursed debauchery, it makes sense that they’ve returned to deadly life in the last decade. Between Brexit, global wildfires, the 2016 and 2020 US elections and COVID-19, much of the world has spent years in an existential crisis. So our renewed interest in vampire fiction may reflect our longing to cheat death and celebrate like it’s 1999.

With more queer books being published than ever before, it makes sense that these trends would converge in the form of a proliferation of queer vampire books.

Still not convinced? Read a few of the queer vampire books on the list below and see if they can’t change your mind.
