Alex Ross Perry is shooting a pavement film

This month, indie director Alex Ross Perry directed an offbeat musical theater show in New York: Slanted! Bewitched!: A Sidewalk Musical. The production is part of an unorthodox feature film about the beloved indie rockers, according to a profile in this week’s New Yorker. Though details are thin, the film will reportedly mix footage from the musical and its making with elements from biopics and documentaries.

The film is reportedly based on an obscure directive from Stephen Malkmus, who, according to profile author Hannah Seidlitz, “said he wasn’t interested in hiring a documentary filmmaker. He wanted to hire a screenwriter. But he didn’t want a script.” Perry, whose resume includes the Pavement video Harness Your Hopes and a string of beguiling films starring Elisabeth Moss, decided to write something “legitimate, ridiculous, real, fake, idiotic, cliche, illogical.” , he said. “Take the Todd Haynes Bob Dylan film, the Scorsese documentary, the Pennebaker documentary, and the film that Dylan himself directed that everyone hates [Renaldo and Clara]and put them all in a blender.” No release date has been set as of yet.
