Avatar 2 is a “family story…like the Sopranos”

Na’vi, Pandora, Gabagool? In a new interview with Total Film magazine (via Variety), James Cameron said Avatar: The Way of the Water is a family story “like The Sopranos.”

Cameron defended the film’s three-hour runtime, which he said was necessary to delve further into the relationships. “The goal is to tell a highly compelling story on an emotional basis,” he explained. “I would say the focus of the new film is more on character, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotions. We didn’t spend as much time on relationships and emotions in the first film as we did in the second film, and it’s a longer film because there are more characters to serve. There is more history to the service.”

The Way of Water is distributed by 20th Century Studios, a Walt Disney Corporation label. “People are like, ‘Oh my god, a Disney family story? Exactly what we want…’ It’s not that kind of family history,” Cameron said. “This is a family story, just like The Sopranos is a family story.”

Avatar: The Way of the Water picks up more than a decade after the events of the first film and finds that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are raising a brood of five children, including Kiri (Sigourney Weaver). Cameron previously said having a family would ground his characters and give their actions weight, unlike Marvel and DC superheroes who “act like they’re in college.” If you’d like, you can rewatch the official Way of the Water trailer now.
