Hulu cuts ties with Justin Roiland amid domestic violence allegation

Hulu announced today that they will be ceasing to work with Justin Roiland after it was revealed that he was accused of domestic violence earlier this month. The co-creator and star of Rick and Morty, who Adult Swim ousted just yesterday, also co-created and voiced on Hulu’s animated series Solar Opposites.

“We have ended our collaboration with Justin Roiland,” read a statement from 20th Television Animation and Hulu Originals (via Deadline).

Roiland was charged in 2020 and pleaded not guilty; However, many of the court documents related to the case were never opened, and information was not released until he appeared in court during a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 12. He faces one felony assault and one felony false imprisonment through threat, violence, fraud and/or deception. The charges stem from an incident in 2020 in which he was accused of instigating a violent fight with a Jane Doe he was dating; she later obtained a protective order against him. Roiland faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

In addition to co-creating Rick and Morty with Dan Harmon, Roiland also voiced both title characters. Those roles are in need of recasting, as the Smash series signed a 70-episode deal with Adult Swim back in 2018, greenlighting it for a total of 10 seasons. Season 6 of Rick and Morty premiered last September. At the time of publication, Hulu has not commented on the fate of Solar Opposites or the new animated series Koala Man, which also stars Roiland.
