Looking for Mr Darcy Review

3 min read

I have neither read Pride and Prejudice nor seen the film. I know a lot of people love it, but it’s not the kind of book for me.

But I know how to do it. The arrogant Mr. Darcy falls in love with the strong-willed Elizabeth, like Bridget Jones Diary.

I was looking for ebooks to read on NetGalley and came across In Search of Mr Darcy: Lessons Learned in the Pursuit of Happily Ever After by Christina Ford. It seemed like an interesting memoir to read.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from books and movies where the character goes on a journey looking for a specific thing, the character finds that specific thing but ends up discovering something even better, like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

I don’t know who Christina Ford actually is. I googled Christina Ford and the results showed Henry Ford’s wife and pictures of her with her husband and with Imelda Marcos. But it turns out that was a different Christina Ford. Haha!

Christina Ford, the author of In Search of Mr Darcy, founded one of the largest commercial production houses. She is one of Marketing Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Canadian Communications. She also has a blog called A-Broad in London, where she shares her travels, life lessons and things British. You must check it! I was inspired to travel more just by looking at her photos.

Anyway, about In Search of Mr. Darcy…

Given the title, In Search of Mr Darcy is about Christina Ford’s search for the man she truly loves and the right relationship from her early 20’s through her 50’s.

In her memoir, Christina Ford shares what she experienced, encountered, and felt with every man she loved and dated, and shares the lessons she learned from each experience. She also shares here the advice she would give to her twenty-five year old self, which I think she gave to me, her reader.

To sum it up in a few words, this memoir is about appreciating yourself over your toxic husband and celebrating people who are always there for you, including yourself.

How many days have I read this?
A few hours and then after a few days all at once.

I wasn’t hooked at first. After reading the first few pages I decided not to read this book anymore because it hadn’t piqued my interest. It took me four days and a boring afternoon to start reading again. I skimmed the pages like I do with non-fiction, then the page where Christina Ford talks about the end of her first marriage caught my attention. She tells how she already knew deep in her heart or instinct that she shouldn’t marry him, but she did anyway. I referred to that. I mean, I haven’t married or been in the same situation, but I can relate how sometimes we know we shouldn’t do something, but we do it anyway. Fellow human beings, why are we doing this?

Christina Ford touches on many themes in In Search of Mr. Darcy, including:

Career Relationship with an addict Divorce Having kids Having an affair Living as a single working mom The person who helps you get back in the game Living at 40 Living at 50 Friendship Fellowship (I like that word!) Moving to another country

My favourite quote?
There is actually a lot. Christina Ford shared many words of wisdom. You will love it. Not sure if I can share some as I read the non-final copy on NetGalley. But here’s one I really like: “He came dressed as Mr. Darcy, but he never was.” Nice, right? It feels like words from a Taylor Swift song.

Am I going to read this again?
I definitely want a real copy of this memoir because it’s the kind of book I want to keep, reread, and recommend.

Can I recommend this book?
Yes! I think every woman should read this no matter what age she is. Young women should read this even if they don’t plan on getting married anytime soon. Christina Ford’s lessons and stories will stay with you.

If you want to find your own Mr. Darcy, you MUST read this memoir. If you can’t find your own Mr. Darcy, you still need to read this.

Special thanks to Icon Books and Net Galley for letting me be one of the first readers of this great memoir! <3
