Mac DeMarco announces new album Five Easy Hot Dogs

Mac DeMarco has announced a new album of instrumentals recorded on a road trip in 2022. He made Five Easy Hot Dogs during a trip from his hometown of Los Angeles to a cabin in Utah, which he described as “kind of a tour, except there weren’t any shows, and [he’d] just burn money.” The song titles correspond to the cities where they were made and it will be released on January 20th, with vinyl releases on May 12th. Check out the track listing below.

DeMarco explained the road trip in a press release: “Some places I stayed longer than others, some I knew from the past, some not so much. I tried to keep things busy all the time. If I didn’t know what was going on in a town I would just walk around until someone recognized me and walk from there. I met a lot of interesting people this way and had a lot of cool experiences.”

Of the shack he landed in, he added:

It probably could have slept about 20 people, but instead it was just me evading nicotine with a bunch of stuffed animals all over the place. No other people for probably 50 miles in any direction. Terrible idea. I lasted one night and returned to Los Angeles the next day,” he says. “When I first got home, I felt like I had given up on my idea and didn’t finish what I had set out to do. But that’s all dog shit.

The nature of jerking around and recording and traveling in this way doesn’t lend itself well to sitting around and planning or thinking about what I was actually up to. I never had a sound in mind, or a theme or anything, I just started recording. Luckily the collection of recordings from this period all shake hands, they as a whole have a contemporary musical identity. I was in while I was in and this came out just the way it was.

This record sounds like what it feels like to roll around like this. I hope you like it.
