Oscars 2023: LCD Soundsystem, Taylor Swift, Mitski, Rihanna and More Make Best Original Song Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists for multiple categories at the 2023 Academy Awards. The Best Original Song race, in particular, features an interesting mix of indie artists and pop stars: LCD Soundsystem, Taylor Swift, Mitski, the Weeknd, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Giveon, Selena Gomez, and Jazmine Sullivan are all shortlisted below find complete.

Former Oscar winners Ludwig Göransson, John Williams, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Alexandre Desplat can compete in the “Best Film Music” category. Other notable contenders for the shortlist include Terence Blanchard, Son Lux, Nicholas Britell and Michael Abels. The full shortlist is below.

The 2022 Oscar for Best Documentary went to Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson for Summer of Soul, and two music-related projects made the shortlist for the 2023 award: Brett Morgen’s David Bowie film, Moonage Daydream and Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, one journey, a song

Notably, the shortlist for best live-action short film doesn’t include Kendrick Lamar’s We Cry Together or Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film, both of which were contenders.

The 2022 Oscar for Best Original Song went to Billie Eilish and Finneas for “No Time to Die.” Hans Zimmer won Best Original Score for his work on Dune.

The 2023 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, California. The nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.
