Ron Jeremy has been declared unfit to stand trial after the disgraced adult actor was found to have severe dementia, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Jeremy, 69, was charged in more than 30 counts of sexual assault in 2020, based on allegations by 20 women. If convicted, he faces more than 250 years in prison.
Before Jeremy’s trial began in 2021, his defense attorney, Stuart Goldfarb, claimed that his client no longer recognized him. Mental health experts for both the prosecution and defense have since determined that Jeremy suffers from severe dementia.
“As a result of the experts’ approval, the defendant is declared unfit to stand trial … his prospects for recovery are not good,” LA County Assistant District Attorney Paul Thompson wrote in an email obtained by the LA Times . “Unless he gets better, we can’t bring him to justice for his crimes. Since the criminal proceedings are suspended while he is incapacitated, we cannot get a guilty plea from him in this case or discuss other measures to do justice to the victims.”
Jeremy will appear in court on January 17 where he will be formally declared of insane. He will then likely be placed in a state hospital.
Jeremy was one of the most well-known male porn actors in adult film history, appearing in more than 2,000 titles throughout his career. However, his fame extended beyond porn as he also worked as a stand-up comedian and reality TV personality. He also served as a consultant on the 1997 film Boogie Nights, had a cameo appearance in the original Ghostbusters film, and appeared in music videos for Sublime, Moby, Insane Clown Posse, Guns N’ Roses, and Mercury Rev.
