This feature began by consolidating four bestseller lists into one, but then the USA Today list was discontinued and it has since dwindled to three. We still don’t have an update on the USA Today list and if it’ll even come back, so I’ve decided to add a new bestseller list to round this out: the indie bestseller list, which uses sales reports from independent bookstores. That should give some other titles a chance to appear here.

In addition to the indie bestseller list, I also used data from the New York Times, both combined print and e-book fiction and combined print and e-book non-fiction lists; Amazon charts, fiction and non-fiction; and publishers weekly. Each list uses its own criteria and dates. So by looking at the overlaps, we can get a better picture of the bestsellers overall.

Although the Indie Best Sellers list has a more diverse list of titles, many of these were not present on any other list, so this one still contains a disproportionate number of white authors. It really shows how publishers’ promises in 2020 — the summer when bestseller lists briefly featured many black authors — have not been kept today.

For a recent release that deserves much more attention, see The Book of Everlasting Things by Aanchal Malhotra.
