Schnell: What is the most popular book at the moment? The fastest to fly off the shelves? What about the top 5? Even for people immersed in the book world (like you really are), this is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. The books you hear about may not be the ones that actually sell the most, and even if you look at the bestseller lists, they don’t all agree. Everyone has their own criteria and sources.
That’s where this combined bestseller list comes in. Each week I compile the bestsellers on four of the most popular lists: the New York Times, both combined print and e-book fiction and combined print and e-book nonfiction lists; Amazon charts, fiction and non-fiction; US Today; and publishers weekly. I jot down titles on several lists in the hope that they will give us a broad overview of the bestselling books of the moment. New additions to the list this week are in bold.
For most of this week, the course remains the same: the usual Colleen Hoover dominance, the new titles are just the latest books in long-running series, and that list continues to be mostly (entirely?) by white authors. The only new addition this week that isn’t part of a series is a Christian self-help title.
Also for new releases that deserve a lot more attention are The Lies We Tell by Katie Zhao and Making Love with the Land: Essays by Joshua Whitehead.
