Titian’s “Venus of Urbino” on New Year’s Eve [by David Lehman]

New Year’s Eve

Champagne and a ribeye, that’s the ticket
Beethoven’s String Quartet in C sharp minor
and good deliverance from the plague year.
Mind can deliver, deliver
and theories will continue to propose
themselves in politically incorrect seminars
in which passionate young men explain
the whole study of aesthetics can be
divided between Titian’s “Venus of Urbino”
and the fashion industry. It’s not fair either
a luxury, this taste for delicacies, this
enjoyment of beauty for its own sake,
those academic escapades and linguistic ones
adventures that can happen
a poem of joy, desired and deserved.

— David Lehman (of Commonweal)
