YG and Lil Wayne have collaborated frequently over the past decade, first teaming up on the remix of YG’s breakout hit “My N****.” Earlier this week, YG honored their close relationship by gifting his “favorite rapper” a red 4Hunnid necklace during video shoot for their new collaboration, “Miss My Dawgs.”
Featuring a melancholic, piano-driven production from Gibbo and Ambezza, “Miss My Dawgs” pays homage to YG’s late friend and rapper Slim 400, who was fatally shot a year ago today. The track’s title could also be a nod to Wayne’s 2004 track “I Miss My Dawgs,” as the rappers remember all their friends who were taken too soon. The accompanying music video pays further tribute with an early shot of a Nipsey Hussle mural.
With dogs barking in the background, YG sets the emotional tone for the track in the chorus, rapping, “Man, I miss my dawgs/The ones I pick up for, ain’t never missed a call.” To “my buddies.” define it, YG keeps it simple, referring to friends who were with him while “coming out of poverty” and still keeping it “honest with me.”
In Wayne’s verse, he talks about “bad memories” before opening up about haters “trying to scrape themselves off.” With almost three decades in hip-hop at age 40, it’s impossible to imagine what his personal life was like — let alone how many people he’s lost over the years.
“Miss My Dawgs” joins 2016’s “I Got a Question” and “Trill”, 2020’s “Blood Walk” and last year’s “Buzzin'” as the latest addition in YG’s long history together and lil wayne one. With its sad tone and heartfelt lyrics, it just might be her best yet.
